Holidays Margaret River manages privately owned holiday homes in and around Margaret River township, the inland hub of the wine region. Houses range from two to five bedrooms and sleep four to ten guests. The town centre, supermarkets and the Saturday farmers market are minutes away, and the coast at Prevelly is about ten minutes west.
We currently manage 12 houses in Margaret River, ranging from 2 to 5 bedrooms and sleeping up to 10 guests.
Margaret River township is the practical centre of the region — about 7,500 people, one long main street, three supermarkets and a Saturday farmers market. It sits roughly nine kilometres inland, which is the thing most first-time visitors get wrong: the town and the coast are two different places, about ten minutes apart.
Staying in town suits people who want to walk to dinner, do a proper grocery shop, and drive out to the beach or the cellar doors each day rather than the other way round. The houses we manage here are in the quiet streets around the township — near the river, in the karri forest on the edge of town, and a short walk from Bussell Highway.
Bussell Highway runs through the middle of Margaret River and is where most of the town happens: cafes, restaurants, galleries, outdoor shops and the two supermarkets on the strip. Woolworths is a block away on Town View Terrace. For a holiday house stay this matters more than it sounds — you can arrive late, shop properly, and not have to drive anywhere the following morning.
The Margaret River Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning year round at the Education Campus on Bussell Highway. It is the single best argument for having a kitchen: local produce, cheese, bread, meat and coffee, and it has won national awards for being exactly what a farmers market should be.
Rotary Park, at the northern end of the main street, sits beside the river with a playground, barbecues, picnic areas and toilets, plus the restored “Old Kate” steam engine and a footbridge across the water. It is also the trailhead for the Ten Mile Brook trail, a fifteen kilometre return walk or ride from the middle of town.
The cellar doors are not in the township — they are spread north and south along Caves Road and the side roads off it. The densest concentration of premium producers is at Wilyabrup, about twenty minutes north, where Vasse Felix, Cullen, Moss Wood, Pierro, Woodlands and Fraser Gallop all sit within a few kilometres of each other.
Beyond wine there are breweries and distilleries across the region, the Margaret River Chocolate Company at Metricup (north of town, not in it, despite the name), Gabriel Chocolate nearby on Harmans Mill Road, Vasse Virgin on Puzey Road, and The Berry Farm at Rosa Glen. If you want to drink properly at the cellar doors, take a tour or arrange a driver — the distances make designated-driver arrangements a poor deal for whoever draws the short straw.
From the township it is about ten minutes west to Prevelly, where the Margaret River meets the ocean and where Surfers Point hosts the Western Australia Margaret River Pro each April. Gnarabup, just south, is the sheltered swimming beach. Gracetown, twenty minutes north on Cowaramup Bay, is the other genuinely calm swimming spot on this coast.
The limestone ridge running the length of the region is riddled with caves, several of them open to visitors. Mammoth Cave is the most accessible and family-friendly, with megafauna fossils, and Lake Cave sits beneath the Boranup forest — both a short drive south on Caves Road. Calgardup Cave, about fifteen minutes south of town, is self-guided with a torch and helmet. Jewel Cave, the largest show cave in Western Australia, is near Augusta, about forty-five minutes away.
Winter is underrated here. The forest is at its best, the waterfalls run, the cellar doors light their fires, and the Cabin Fever festival in July exists precisely because July in Margaret River is worth turning up for.
Houses across the region book out months ahead for all four. If your dates are fixed around one of them, book early.

Margaret River township is about 277 kilometres south of Perth, which is roughly a three hour drive down the Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway then the Bussell Highway.
Not directly, but close. Busselton Margaret River Airport is about 45 minutes north of the township and takes direct Jetstar services from Melbourne. Routes and frequencies change from season to season, so check current schedules before booking. Most visitors drive from Perth or hire a car at the airport, and a car is essential once you are here.
The township sits about nine kilometres inland. The closest beaches are Prevelly, at the mouth of the Margaret River, and Gnarabup just south of it - both about ten to twelve minutes by car. Gracetown, on sheltered Cowaramup Bay, is about twenty minutes north.
Yes, three. Coles and Riverfresh IGA are both on Bussell Highway in the town centre, and Woolworths is on Town View Terrace. There are also butchers, bakeries and specialty food shops within walking distance of the main street, so self-catering in a holiday house is straightforward.
Every Saturday morning, from about 7.30am to 11.30am, year round, at the Margaret River Education Campus on Bussell Highway. It has been running since 2002 and was named Australia's most outstanding farmers market in the 2018 delicious. Produce Awards. Park at the campus rather than on the highway verge.
For most groups, yes. The region is spread out and largely self-catering by nature: the wineries and beaches are a drive apart, the farmers market and the local produce reward having a kitchen, and evenings tend to happen around a table rather than in a restaurant. A house also works out cheaper per person once there are more than two of you.
The houses in and around the township range from two bedrooms up to five, sleeping four to ten guests. If you need more space than that, our larger group properties are in Wilyabrup, north of town.
Four anchor the calendar. The Western Australia Margaret River Pro, a World Surf League Championship Tour event, runs at Surfers Point in Prevelly in April. Cabin Fever is the winter festival in July. The Readers and Writers Festival is usually in May. Pair'd Margaret River Region, the region's food, wine and music festival, runs in November - it replaced the former Gourmet Escape. The caves are the obvious answer, and they are genuinely good: Mammoth and Lake Caves are a short drive south on Caves Road, Calgardup is about fifteen minutes south and self-guided, and Jewel Cave is near Augusta. Beyond that, cellar doors, the chocolate factory at Metricup, breweries, galleries and the town's cafes all work perfectly well in winter, which is also when the forest and the waterfalls are at their best.
Yes. There is very little public transport, and the wineries, beaches, caves and forest are all spread across a region rather than concentrated in a town. If you are planning a full day of tastings, consider a tour or a local driver rather than nominating someone to stay sober.
